Did you know today is #BrunsCo's 262nd birthday? ๐ On March 9, 1764, the Governor of #NorthCarolina signed the legislative act that created Brunswick County out of #NewHanoverCounty and #BladenCounty. It was named after the Town of Brunswick. The county seat was first located at Brunswick Town, a town whose ruins can still be seen at the @brunswicktown_fortanderson State Historic Site in Winnabow. In 1779, the county seat was moved to Lockwood Folly. In 1808, the county seat was moved to Smithville, known today as Southport, where it remained for 167 years. In 1975, a referendum passed, moving the county seat from @cityofsouthport to its present location near the Town of Bolivia. With North Carolinaโs spring wildfire season arriving at a time when most of the state is experiencing moderate to severe drought, the N.C. Forest Service is urging the public to apply best practices and common sense with all outdoor fire, especially yard debris burns. Check out these best practices ๐ https://bit.ly/4ayAooE ๐ฅ Check local burning laws. Some communities allow burning only during specified hours. Others forbid it entirely. ๐ฅ Make sure you have a valid permit. You can obtain a burn permit at any N.C. Forest Service office or authorized permitting agent, or online at www.ncforestservice.gov/burnpermits. ๐ฅ Keep an eye on the weather. Donโt burn on dry, windy days. ๐ฅ Local fire officials can recommend a safe way to burn debris. Donโt pile vegetation on the ground. Instead, place it in a cleared area and contain it in a screened receptacle away from overhead branches and wires. ๐ฅ Be sure you are fully prepared before burning. To control the fire, you will need a hose, bucket, steel rake and a shovel for tossing dirt on the fire. Keep a phone nearby, too. ๐ฅ Never use kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel or other flammable liquids to speed up debris burning. ๐ฅ Stay with your fire until it is completely out. If itโs too hot to touch, itโs too hot to leave. ๐ฅ These same tips apply to campfires and grills as well. Douse burning charcoal briquettes or campfires thoroughly with water. Drown all embers, not just the red ones. When soaked, stir the coals and soak them again. Make sure everything is wet and that embers are cold to the touch. If you do not have water, mix enough dirt or sand with the embers to extinguish the fire, being careful not to bury the fire. Never dump hot ashes or coals into a wooded area. #BrunsCo #BrunswickCountyNC #NorthCarolina #FireSafety #Wildfire | Posted Feb. 23, 2026 |

โ๏ธ Winter Weather Update (Feb. 1, 2026) โ๏ธ โ ๏ธ Dangerous cold conditions continue through today through at least early Tuesday morning. We could potentially see wind chill temperatures around 0 degrees Fahrenheit this evening. โ๏ธ Hazardous travel and impacts to infrastructure will continue for days to come due to snow and icy conditions. ๐ซ๐ Stay off the roads! The recent snowfall is creating low visibility and hazardous driving conditions. Staying at home protects both you and keeps roads clear for first responders and NCDOT crews trying to clear them. ๐ก While there have been minimal power outages due to the storm, periods of extremely cold weather cause higher demands on electric systems. Take steps like reducing thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting, avoid using major appliances between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., turn off any unnecessary devices/lights, and charge electric vehicles midday when demand is lower. โญ Brunswick County Government offices, libraries, parks, health clinic, social services, and other facilities will be closed Monday, Feb. 2. The Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. is also canceled. โผ๏ธ GFL Environmental will not conduct curbside cart collection on Monday. Monday customers will receive a make-up collection on Saturday, Feb. 7 (subject to change based on conditions). โป๏ธ GFL Environmental will assess road conditions and other factors throughout the week to determine whether their crews can safely collect curbside trash and recycling carts as normally scheduled.
