Capturing the 15 mins that the midday sun reaches the dry planting at this time of year - and then only brushing through the seedheads of the tallest plants and never reaching the ground. A bitterly cold day, especially in the shade. 1. Seedheads of Monarda fistulosa and allium sphaerocephalon 2. A very lean looking Euphorbia wulfenii 3. The one Echinacea pallida that's flowered all year rethinking it's life choices. 4. Echinops tienshanicum is just tall enough (at 2m) to get enough sun to accesorise its snowy head dress with a tiny icicle 5. Common fennel is sleek enough not to have been squashed by the snow and the seedheads are among the best about. 6. Robin on Viburnum rhytidophyllum 7. The leaves on this Cercos persist for a long time and have a lovely burnt yellow colour 8. Liquidambar styraciflua and Stipa gigantea #snowygarden #wintergarden #shefplanting #sheffieldgardens #naturalisticplantingdesign #gardeningwithgrasses

Snow day! 1&2. Kniphofia rooperi doing an impression of a Solero 3. Robin. You may be seeing more of him 😬 4&5 Echinacea pallida... Part of a batch of autumn'23 seedlings that barely survived damping off over winter and a particularly bad batch of peat free compost in spring...re-started in 90% sand nursery beds and have thrived. 6. Robin. Thinks he's monarch of the glen. 7&8. Glyrhizza yunnanenis 9. Robin. We've reached an agreement that he'll do our corporate Christmas card and calendar cover shot if I keep the suet pellets flowing 10. Tillia henreyana...large leaves persisting late into Autumn, not sure if this some form of Marcescenece on this still young tree, but if so its counter productive as it was very nearly bent double with the weight of the snow 11. Lychnis coronaria 12. Erithacus rubecus on Metasequoia glyptostroboides 13. Feeding my neighbour's beautiful Sebastopol geese (still young and shy) 14. Robin..Somewhat less shy than the geese!

The sun came out for nearly half an hour today, which bought the sum total of sunshine hours for the last 2 weeks to...nearly half an hour 😎 #autumn #autumne #fall #herbst #herfst #naturalisticplantingdesign #shefplanting #gardeningwithgrasses

A weekend incredibly low on light, but 3 species Dahlia continuing to shine. I love the incongruity of their vitality against the rapidly turning colours of the grasses and forbs they've shared the summer with. 1. D. Merckii 2. D. Australis 3. D. Imperialis 'Alba' 4. Aralia elata absolutely glowing 5. A few last flowers on persicaria 'september spires' 6. A stunning spontaneous persicaria seedling in the nursery beds... Probably a cross of 'spetember spires' and 'alba', it has deep purple anthers with pink stamens, the whole flower being ever so slightly flushed with bluish pink. 7. Charlotte's arrangement of late flowers from the field briefly caught a rare sliver of sunlight. #dahlia #autumn #autumncolours #fallcolors #aralia #cutflowers #naturalisticplanting #persicaria

A misty day at our field, warping perceptions of colour, sound and distance. Ergot, Claviceps purperescens (last pic), would have done the same, but in a considerably less enjoyable way for our ancestors unlucky enough to eat bread infected by it . Flourishing here on Molinia caerulea in the damp meadow. #ergot #dampmeadow #wildflowers #naturalisticplantingdesign #spooky
