Hey what do y’all think is the best Mr. Skelly aesthetic!? And don’t say “all!” Haha I’m really stuck trying to make sure this character doesn’t become campy, or too cringe lol. It’s a fine line honestly and it means a lot to me, so I’m curious if y’all think some vibes like the green colors with deep meanings are more powerful than simpler quotes with more thematic coloring (Christmas, fall, etc) I’m a brand designer by trade (haven’t shared enough of our work on that front this year haha but there is a TON!) so branding the longevity of this Mr Skelly is very important to me. I also have received so many requests for product ideas but the truth is we’re incredibly intentional about what we make every year because we don’t just want to make and sell stuff. Instead, we’re more concerned with creating long lasting, reusable ethically produced goods that are cool for y’all and good for this earth of ours. Seriously humans don’t need more crap and so I don’t want to make unnecessarily or outside of inspiration just to get dollars. Sometimes animation is just about appreciating how much effort goes into movement. Learning animation has given me a much deeper appreciation for life in general and the miraculousness of how everything is always working, moving, breathing. Seriously so funny but every time I look at the insights of a reel or post it’s a massive purple section that says “people who have seen your work, people who don’t follow you” for some reason they’re trying really hard to prioritise our creative content for an audience that doesn’t really care! I have been so full on busy every day the last few weeks as we prepare the way for 2025, it’s reduced the time I normally have to animate, especially as I’ve finished filming the animation tutorial! You don’t have to set yourself on fire to keep others warm. I made this animation at a time I needed it so deeply last year, during this month. I needed to constantly remind myself that sticking up for my own feelings, my own desires and boundaries and what was best for me is not something I need to sacrifice in order to please other people. And that’s only who I mean. We’re not meant to please everyone and we’re so terrible with confrontation anymore that often people get taken advantage of and over correct, becoming apathetic and destructive in the wake. It’s okay to stand up for yourself, and also realize the world is not out to get you despite the actions of a few. I wanted to upgrade the original animation and paired it with a scene you all know, adding in some snow and cold December vibes along with enhanced sound and lighting. I hope you love it and remember, even during the holidays, you don’t have to sacrifice yourself to please others, the peace of a group is not your responsibility to maintain or preserve. Repetition. If you’re someone who is on social media a lot you might see the same things posted time and again, but not everyone sees something you see, even if you see it a lot. This is a very small example but a good one for understanding our own optics, and how our perception of life is not shared with anyone. Our experiences can feel like gospel at times, especially when some have repeated. Being hurt as a child, for example can begin to set into you an identity that you’re a hurt person, or that you deserve to be hurt, and no amount of kindness from strangers or friends alike seems to sway your mind. You’re stuck believing that your experience is valid, even when it could be heartbreakingly wrong. For the past several years I’ve been trying to undo my own trauma identity, suffering sexual abuse as a young boy. I struggled with a lot of outward addictions as a way of coping, and you realize that life is a lot more about overcoming than giving in. Overcoming your perception of self, of others, as opposed to simply saying “that’s how they are because it’s how I see them”. I shared this post a while back, and feel compelled to share it again, because my hope is in understanding someone new might see it, but also some times it takes doing, seeing, hearing something again and again and again, in order for it to hit you. I hope this finds you in a good spot, and if doesn’t I pray it helps you out. We have access to the largest communication tool on earth, that makes hellish information spread at the speed of light, thank you for helping to be a part of the vessel that gets goodness out there to compete. Wow I’m not even sure what to say except thank you. I know I keep saying it haha! I have “sorry” tattooed on my hand because one time when I was 18 I ruined the door of a home I was staying in as a guest. I felt so guilty, and it was purely an accident. But I kept apologising until the woman of the home stopped me “you should only ever say sorry once Christian, you can say thank you as much as you’d like, but sorry only ever once”. I use it as a reminder to not apologize simply for existing. It’s okay to make honest mistakes and own up to them, but don’t bury yourself in a hole of self defeat. So I suppose saying thank you so much this year feels natural for my own growth, heck I just feel grateful. To be honest the place I’m in feels so much healthier than I’ve ever felt. And embracing my grief as a skeleton character, learning how to animate and paint this year has shown me just how important it is to be honest and open about learning. Are my works perfect? Nowhere near, but I’m learning everyday to get better, and I thoroughly enjoy sharing these moments with you. Thank you for allowing Mr. Skelly such a place to thrive, without you all supporting me in so many ways we just wouldn’t be where we are.
