Meet Baltimore Showcase Juror Ismael Sanz-Peña! Huge thanks for helping to choose the Best Baltimore Animation in the 2024 Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival! Ismael Sanz-Pena is an internationally acclaimed animator. After receiving his Postgraduate Diploma in Character Animation at Central Saint Martins London he moved to Los Angeles to study Experimental Animation at the California Institute of the Arts. Ismael has since worked on music videos, commercials, promotional videos and independent films across the globe. Among other screenings his work has been exhibited in the National Gallery London, Annecy, Hiroshima, Zagreb and Questors Theatre, the largest community theatre in Europe. He is a faculty member in the Animation Department at Maryland Institute College of Art @mica_animation

Meet International Jury Member Sarah Mae Schmidt - @sarahmaeschmidt Big thanks to Sarah for helping to choose award winners for the 2024 Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival. Sarah Schmidt is an animator and curator from small-town, Ohio. After earning a BFA at Columbus College of Art & Design in 2014, she began working in-house at a boutique motion design studio while making independent films, music videos, and gig posters. In 2018, she started teaching as an adjunct animation professor before earning her MFA at DePaul University. She has been curating independent animation shows and self-publishing fanzines under the name “Malt Adult” since 2016. In 2019, she co-founded Sunshine Mall LLC with partner and creative collaborator Ian Ballantyne. They work out of their studio in Chicago, Illinois.

Meet International Jury MemberJulia Chien - @julias_not_creative Huge thanks to Julia for helping to choose award winners for the 2024 Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival. Julia Chien is a Maryland-born Taiwanese-American animator, filmmaker, and puppeteer based in Brooklyn. She graduated from RISD with a BFA in Film/Animation/Video in 2022. Her mixed-media animated film WO RM (2022) has screened at festivals internationally, including Sweaty Eyeballs in 2023! Most recently, she created and performed her first theatrical work, a puppet play titled I AM A CLAM (2024) with the Object Movement Residency and Festival in Manhattan. Julia’s work focuses on feelings of loneliness and hopeful connection, often using lowly animals as her vehicle. Her work explores the internal, the textural, and the gooey.
