How Many Ways Can You Use a Pot? Pots are incredibly versatile in the garden. Here are some creative ways we’ve used them: Photo 1 & 2 - Planted Pots The classic use for pots is planting. Elevating plants slightly creates focal points, showcases seasonal changes, and adds interest. Photo 3 & 4 - Visual Connection Pots can harmonize with plant colors, surroundings, or garden elements, enhancing aesthetics and creating visual harmony. Photo 5 - Planting Edibles Pots are perfect for growing vegetables and herbs. At the Floriade Expo, we designed gabion planters made from recycled peach pits. These space-saving pots are ideal for urban gardens. Photo 6-10 - Fire Pits We transformed Atelier Vierkant clay pots into fire pits. Topped with bespoke timber lids, they also serve as coffee tables—perfect for compact city gardens. Photo 11-16 - Water Features Pots can easily become water features, introducing calming elements to your garden. Photo 17 - Combining Pots Using pots with similar styles but different purposes creates a cohesive, unified garden design. Photo 18 - Large Sculptural Elements In our South Kensington Gem project, we used large, subtly hued pots to add bold yet understated sculptural features, enhancing the garden’s intrigue. Photo 19 & 20 - Empty Sculptural Pots Empty pots add texture and structure, especially during winter. They guide the eye through the garden and create balance without overpowering other elements. Embracing nature’s rhythm in the heart of West London 🍂🌿 Nestled beneath the majestic canopies of old London Plane trees, this enchanting garden features a woodland edge environment that beckons you to explore its seasonal beauty. As autumn unfolds, we’re excited to share how this garden showcases the rich tapestry of nature’s cycles. At SMLA, our design philosophy centres on creating vibrant planting palettes that thrive year-round. Each element is carefully selected to ensure there’s always something captivating to admire—whether it’s the cheerful spring bulbs, the lush greenery and vibrant blooms of summer, the warm autumn hues illuminated by soft golden light, or the striking structure revealed in winter. We believe in creating gardens that embraces all seasons from the start. Many people feel the need to introduce late-flowering plants at this time of year, only to replace them with something else later for the next season. This approach not only contradicts sustainable horticultural practices but also overlooks the opportunity to embrace natural change in the garden. As this garden is currently bursting with stunning autumn shades and textures: crisp leaves underfoot, late-blooming flowers adding delightful splashes of colour, and grasses swaying gracefully in the breeze.
