Our Pike Place Market Childcare and Preschool is featured on @dezeen. “After many years of fundraising, the school enlisted SHED to design a renovation for the Center. ‘The goal of the renovation was to create a dynamic and versatile space that would encourage infants and preschoolers to invent, discover and build social, cognitive and physical skills in a more open and spacious setting,’ [said SHED Architecture].” Thank you for the feature, @dezeen! A closer look at the primary bath in our Golden House project. Covered in black and white terrazzo tile, we used white oak as a connecting datum behind the mirrors, wrapping around the tub to create a spot for an accent light and plant shelf. Our Pizza for Change initiative encourages people to support local organizations that build up their community in exchange for the plans of our fan-favorite pizza oven. Since we started the initiative in 2020, we’ve raised $23,639 for organizations including @facinghomelessness, @blklivesmatter, and @wanawariseattle. DM us “pizza” to receive more information on how to get involved. Photos: @markwoodsphoto #seattlearchitects #homedesign #residentialdesign #pizzaoven #givingtuesday

It’s soup season at our Seward Park Remodel. The project’s kitchen is a composition of distinct but interconnected functional zones united by a continuous counter weaving through the kitchen and pantry. The countertop material varies to suit its function: solid walnut at the eating counter, stainless steel around the cooktop and sink, and honed limestone in the baking area. The counter establishes a horizontal datum against the walnut plywood cabinets, composed and built by @kerfdesign, to create playful multicolored patterns and textures. Located less than ten feet uphill from the original cabin, the Guemes Island Bunkhouse is compact and designed for sleeping, an intentional decision to ensure friends and family gather at the cabin for morning coffee, group dinners, and late-night card games. Construction update from our Fidalgo Island Sheds. The sheds will create a home for a couple who are professional musicians, builders, avid fishermen, and free divers, not to mention health insurance specialists! The three sheds will shelter their various pursuits: from living to working, making music to working on boats, processing fish and crab, and storing necessary tools and equipment. The exterior of our West Seattle Chalet features wood siding reminiscent of Swiss barns and mountain structures, complemented by a durable metal roof. We added high-performance triple-glazed windows and external solar shades to control heat gain and glare, and elemental materials throughout for a minimalist palette. The Mori House is featured on @dwellmagazine—our renovation of a 1963 Saul Zaik-designed home in Portland, OR. A key part of our design was removing an existing loft and spiral staircase, revealing a soaring nail-laminated wood roof that extends to a central skylight. “For the redesign, [SHED Principal, Prentis] Hale drew on an experience from architecture school: a visit to the Villa Schreiner by architect Sverre Fehn in Oslo. Though the two houses are very different in many respects, Hale remembers the villa as ‘sort of a dark and moody house,’ small in size, with a central core lit up by a skylight. ‘That allowed the light to impact every room in that house at different times of the day. So the design investigation became, if we are going to remove this loft, how do we do that so every space on the upper floor and even some on the lower floor participate in that experience? We’re not going to rip it out and then do nothing with it.’… ‘Now when you’re on the upper level, there isn’t a room from which you cannot see the skylight.’” Thank you for the feature, @dwellmagazine! November in the trees. What was once deemed an “unbuildable” lot became the “Treehouse” years later. Our design investigates how the enclosure opens to and retreats from the forest.
