A hideaway in the heart of Provence was the last, somewhat unlikely home of Jean-Claude Brialy – actor, director, filmmaker, restaurateur, theatre manager, writer and raconteur. The cosy, cluttered drawing room was Jean Claude’s version of a turn-of-the-century interior in a French country house. The 19th-century chauffeuses and the draped table in the foreground were his tribute to the shabby chic look of the late grande dame of interior design, Madeleine Castaing. Photography by René Stoeltie, as seen in The World of Interiors.

The owner of this tiny apartment in the centre of Paris, a connoisseur of art and antiques, freely admits that he possesses far more things than he could ever hope to display within its off-white walls. Here, an 18th-century terracotta bust looks askance towards a patinated console by Eric Schmitt for Christian Liaigre and a Louis XVI folding tripod table. For the decorative artist George Oakes and his wife, Judith, a meticulously bedecked grotto was the obvious addition to their countryside cottage, complete with sea-urchin finials and a modern take on Venus modelled on Judith herself. Photograph: James McDonald, as seen in The World of Interiors

The owner of this tiny apartment in the centre of Paris, a connoisseur of art and antiques, freely admits that he possesses far more things than he could ever hope to display within its off-white walls. Here, a circa 1900 portrait by Albert Lynch lives alongside a second Empire giltwood chair, and an Art Nouveau pendant lamp attributed to Maurice Dufrêne.
