Posted @withregram • @officialhumansofbombay “I've always been dark skinned, so I grew up feeling ‘lesser’ amongst fair-skinned girls. But Dad called me his ‘beautiful girl.’ Bt things changed in college. I’d overhear boys call me ‘the dark one.’ Once, thy sang a demeaning song describing a dark girl & pointed at me; I fled. I grew self-conscious & started slapping cream on my face, but nothing worked; I dnt ‘fit’ in. I’d get complimented for was my dressing, but even dat would be followed up with a, ‘u wud look better if u were ‘fairer.’’ I thot if I worked hard, they’d respect me. So I studied hard & got a job at an MNC. Still, they’d say ‘Your husband will see your face, not your resume.’ As I turned 25, there was pressure to settle down. My aunts told Mom, ‘Dark girls don’t find grooms easily.’ Nd it was tough–in 3 years, I got rejected by a dozen boys who thought I wasn’t ‘pretty’ enough. Once, a boy said, ‘I like you, but change your hair colour, it doesn’t suit your skin tone.’ I was shocked. When my parents wantd me to accept his proposal, I rebelled, ‘Today it’s my hair colour, tomorrow it’ll be something else.’ Saying that was liberating! I decided to face my insecurities head on. I used to be camera-shy, so to overcome that, I started posting my pictures online. And then, a brand approached me; I was ecstatic! When I went to their studio, the makeup artist said, ‘We don’t have your foundation shade.’ I was hurt. Still, I thankd them & walked out. After that, I started blogging- I’d write about toxic beauty standards. It caught on & kind words started pouring in. Once, a follower said, ‘You’re beautiful like the Moon.’ As a kid, Mom would make me try home remedies, but she now understands that no amount of multani mitti will work! For yrs, I wore my dark skin like a badge of shame, but today, I’m proud of it. Girls facing the same kind of bullying reached out to me saying I inspired them. And that’s what defines me, not my skin colour. I’ve abandoned the fear of not finding a husband; one day someone will love me for me. Until then, I’m content in my own skin & no one can take that away from me!”
