The Carolina wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) and its amazing song visually analized. I didn't even know this bird existed until @yuriy_melnyk_photography contacted me, sharing with me his beautiful video of a Carolina Wren asking me to visualize it. Since I liked it a lot I gave it a try. The song has a very defined and compact pattern so I imagined it as a closed, cyclic visual loop and tried to organize the visual system like that. Somehow Somewhere is now available for everyone to listen! See link in bio! I'm really excited to share this album with all of you. Adding a completely new path to one's career is no everyday feat and this is a very important moment for me. After 15 years as a filmmaker and visual artist I got back to music. I won't leave it anymore. 'Somehow, Somewhere' is an acoustic/classical guitar album with 12 songs and one video. The music ranges through different genres and you will find a little story describing every song. It's available on Bandcamp as a digital copy priced 5โ‚ฌ. It can be freely listened without limitations on the platform. If you like it, share it! And if you would consider to buy it or make an offer to support you're more than welcome ๐Ÿ™ย a bonus track is there for you, together with a booklet and additional visual content. Thank you all and enjoy! Have a good one ๐Ÿ”ฅโค๐ŸŽถ #guitar #album #albumrelease #acousticguitar #classicalguitar #bandcamp #bandcampmusic

Ready for a full immersion in visual bird songs? If so, see link in bio, go on YouTube and thank me later ๐Ÿ˜€ This is the first version of a systematic data visualization model for birds songs and a platform to develop further work. Hope you enjoy watching it! Let me know what you think in the comments of you like. #bird #birds #visual #generative #touchdesigner #realtime #nature

Visualizing the song of a very creative blackbird (Turdus merula) I recorded few days ago. Blackbirds never cease to amaze me with their ever changing song and impressive vocabulary of verses and trills. As far as I can hear, their song has even more variety than the one of nightingales. Every datapoint has four different sets of information: the color which indicates the most active frequency band at emission time, an amplitude value on top (scale 0 to 1), a lifetime on the left (in seconds, animated, starting from zero at the moment of emission), and an absolute emission time on bottom (in seconds, with the counter starting from 0 at the beginning of the animation). Created with Touchdesigner, filmed and recorded by myself. #blackbird #bird #birdsong #touchdesigner #datavisualization #realtime #nature

Even the simplest sounds in nature can unveil endless beauty and complexity. Visual analysis of the song of a great tit (Parus major Linnaeus). The animation is generative and entirely triggered by the audio recording. New visuals on a singing nightingaleย (Luscinia megarhynchos), one of nature's most beautiful voices. I'm improving and optimizing the workflow in order to get better visuals for longer videos I'm working on right now. Now every datapoint has four different sets of information: the color which indicates the most active frequency band at emission time, an amplitude value on top (scale 0 to 1), a lifetime on the left (in seconds, animated, starting from zero at the moment of emission), and an absolute emission time on bottom (in seconds, with the counter starting from 0 at the beginning of the animation). As this is intended to be a data visualization project, I am experimenting to see how much information can be contained in each individual point. The points distribution in space tries to represent the different features of the song without fixed measures on the axes. At the end of each verse, the dot matrix creates some kind of generative 3d sculpture, which is constantly changing at each play. Longer videos will soon be available on YouTube! I'm doing lots of work to rearrange all the material and all the birds I have filmed over the past months to create a first collection. It will be combined with a web presentation, which will serve as a platform to present the project. Are you willing to watch a video like this but 5-10 minutes long with many different birds? Let me know in the comments ๐Ÿ‘ Created with Touchdesigner, filmed and recorded by myself. #nightingale #bird #birdsong #touchdesigner #datavisualization #generative #realtime #nature

Visualizing the song of a blackbird (Turdus merula) with visuals composited on live footage. New add-on: the points color now is completely independent from the visual shapes/development and it's related exclusively on frequency. A color band below indicates which color corresponds to a specific frequency band, in a range from 2k Hz to 8k Hz which is roughly where this blackbird song develops. Each point brings the color of the most active frequency band at that specific moment (roughly, considering there are multiple frequencies constantly at play, harmonics etc).ย A spectrogram image of the audio is at the bottom, to give a better idea of how the frequency range is translated visually. This visual is a datapoint model generated by amplitude oscillations, no fixed measurements on the axes. Each point has an amplitude value (top) on a scale of 0 to 1 and an emission lifetime (bottom), measured in frames at a rate of 60 fps. The animation is generative and meant to be looped with ever changing shapes. Created with Touchdesigner, filmed and recorded by myself. #blackbird #datavisualization #touchdesigner #bird #birdsong #generative #realtime #visual

Experimenting with ways to integrate my visualization of bird songs into live shots. The images move behind and in front of the bird, with some keying to give the illusion of depth. The bird is a chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) that I filmed a few days ago at close range. It's fun to see him looking around almost as if he's thinking "what are those colorful things around me?โ€ This visual is a datapoint model generated by amplitude oscillations, no fixed measurements on the axes. Each point has an amplitude value (top) on a scale of 0 to 1 and an emission lifetime (bottom), measured in frames at a rate of 60 fps. Visualizing the song of a beautiful song thrush. After quite a search and being very cautious, I was fortunate enough to film this thrush from a distance on two different occasions, both times on the same branch of the same tree: this makes me think that they are rather habitual birds. I was able to film several minutes that I will use for longer visuals. Its song is well defined and recognizable even at a great distance, alternating chirps with whistles that switch between different frequency bands. It is interesting to try to put these characteristics into a visual dialogue in order to create a musical interpretation of its song. How much this can be intersected with what a scientific interpretation of his verses could be, this is a question that interests me very much. This visual is a datapoint model modulated by amplitude oscillations, no fixed measurements on the axes. Each point has an amplitude value (top) on a scale of 0 to 1 and an emission lifetime (bottom), measured in frames at a rate of 60 fps. There's a fadeout timer on each point for clarity purposes in order to avoid excessive density in the visual, but it could be possible to make them last much longer. The animation is generative and meant to be looped indefinitely with ever changing shapes. Today's visuals have a very special guest, Sarah Tidwell's European starling aka The Mouth aka @inkydragon! Sarah asked me if I was interested in experimenting with her little virtuoso and I gladly accepted since I've known him for a long time. In fact, his voice box is something unbelievable and he's an incredible mimic; I also see he seems capable of polyphony, ie emitting more than one sound at once. I analyzed his song with the same approach I could use for a piece of contemporary music, and it's hard to believe how much complexity a few seconds of his vocal producing can contain if one's willing to unravel them. Each point has an amplitude data (above) on a scale of 0 to 1 and an emission lifetime (below), measured in frames at a rate of 60 fps.
