RHS Bridgewater has won first prize in the European Garden Awards, in the Design or Concept of a Contemporary Park or Garden category 🏆🥇🏆 We are so thrilled for the RHS, for the fantastic Bridgewater garden teams and for all the amazing volunteers who have made it such a very special place. It’s also recognition of the many who were involved in the realisation of this fifth public garden for the RHS - contractors, fabricators and nurseries. A huge and remarkable team effort. We’re honoured to have played a very small part in the story with the design of the kitchen garden, and to have the opportunity to work with the legendary @tomstuartsmith whose inspired design for Bridgewater has made this such a beautiful place. *Appointment news - Barbican Conservatory* We are thrilled to be appointed to join the team dedicated to the renewal of the iconic Barbican Conservatory. We will be working closely with @alliesandmorrison @asifkhan.now @buro_happold and Head Gardener Marta Lowcewicz @martacitygardener and her team on the project. After 40+ years, the Conservatory’s infrastructure is at a critical tipping point: ⚡️ The glass envelope is failing, causing significant botanic and surfaces deterioration. ⚡️ Cracks in the concrete structure are causing leaks, damaging the theatre below. ⚡️ Outdated technical and operational systems no longer support the incredible horticultural work of the team. ⚡️ Major accessibility challenges mean the space is not yet a place everyone can enjoy. What will the renewal mean? 🌱 Revitalising planting: Plants remain the star of the show, with world class environmental conditions and facilities 🌱 Improving accessibility: New plans will open up previously inaccessible and closed off areas, ensuring the space is welcoming and inclusive for all. 🌱 Future-proofing: Combining cutting-edge innovation and sustainability credentials to secure the Conservatory for generations to come. Within our team, we have brought together an incredible cohort of heritage and horticultural specialists to ensure this transformation is considered, rigorous and appropriate. Joining us are horticultural experts @matt.pottage, Christopher Young, and Phil Griffiths, alongside modernist landscape history authority @karen_fitzsimon “Cinematic and monumental, the Barbican Conservatory is a place unlike any other. Horticulture, history, design—all wrapped into unparalleled eco-brutalist experience. It’s a place where Londoners know they can lose themselves in the planting and architecture, and where first-time visitors stand open-mouthed in wonder. To have the opportunity to only work on it ourselves, but to also be able bring together a handpicked team of botanic and heritage experts at the top of their game to work with on a day-to-day basis—this is the dream project of a lifetime.” @charloharris 📷 @alistergthorpe #harrisbuggstudio #barbicanconservatory #ecomodernism
For this year’s Christmas get together, we decided to try something new; printmaking! Warmly and expertly tutored by Colin, Staffan and Ellie at @artichokeprintworkshop, we had a blast experimenting with etching and drypoint throughout the day. It was fantastic to see the variation in everyone’s work under the encouragement of the team at Artichoke, and not only have prints to take away, but the satisfaction of having learned something new together too. A fitting reason to raise our glasses at the pub afterwards, inky fingers and all!
Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East is busily in progress. Groundworks and infrastructure are almost complete; the social hub building is under construction and the garden pod safely delivered from @bighedgeco where it’s been carefully looked after since Chelsea. Also at their nursery are the Chelsea trees which have recently been checked and numbered for positioning in the garden, ready for delivery and planting later this month. They’ll be joined by 20 much more juvenile trees to give this garden plenty of dappled shade for patients whose temperature regulation has been affected by the spinal injury they’ve experienced. More updates to follow! HBS team: Sybille de Cussy, Natalie Bailey, Ollie Pike, Katherine Langley, Nancy Molyneux and Charlotte Harris with visuals by Joe Hawksworth. Contractor: Main contractor RLX; soft works contractor Atlas Green Loving care of all Chelsea elements including pod, water feature, trees and shrubs by Big Hedge Company #harrisbuggstudio #adaptivedesign #adaptivegarden #gardendesign #landscapedesign #plantingdesign #inprogress #onsite #rhschelsea #bestinshow #projectgivingback
We’re working in collaboration with @knoxbhavan on a new residential London garden for a young family. As with many of our projects, stone for the garden was from pre-used, reclaimed or surplus sources. This approach allowed us to enjoy being more flexible and hands-on, adapting our design in response to available materials rather than pre-ordered, virgin supplies. We find it rewarding to work this way, embracing a responsive design process over a traditional, pre-planned approach. Particular thanks to the team at @farmlanelandscaping who have made the garden so beautifully and been so collaborative on it. Also we LOVE a garden with side return - creating a little microclimate gem of a garden within a garden with slices of views from the bedroom and bathroom. Thanks Knox Bhavan for not extending to the side! Planting is a scheme of bold foliage, contrasting textures and bright colour to create immersive moments in the garden and lush, layered views from the house. Tree ferns are in; rest of the shrubs, perennials and bulbs due to be set out and planted in a couple of weeks. Hugo designed these nice sweet chestnut guards for the orchard and estate trees we’ve planted in the garden and grounds of a listed manor house in Dorset. Even the chickens, newly moved into the house we’ve designed for them, seemed to approve. Every project is only made possible by the expertise of those that make ideas reality and for that we are grateful to the amazing team @waterartisans - not only for their water engineering prowess but also groundworks, hard landscaping, soft landscaping and planting for this long-term phased project. Saskia who is working with Hugo on the project also made up some of these beautiful tree, shrub and rose tags with the label jig. Thanks to the wider studio for earphones and tolerance after an afternoon of tapping and lettering. Seasonal studio togetherness - we came together from our various studios and locations to the @exchangeerith for a day of weaving with the wonderful @janeybaskets We started with willow in the morning, and then in the afternoon moved onto rush, with Jane showing us the different tones when woven in of other dried foliage, from Crocomia to Narcissi. A time to slow down and be in the moment and making together. Of course, we also took the time to explore and enjoy the exquisite garden designed by @sarahpricelandscapes, built by @garden_build @surreyironcraft, and gardened so brilliantly by @colindavidstewart And afterwards we went to the pub and played varying degrees of inspired and terrible pool… #thecommongood #harrisbuggstudio #daysout #londongarden #timetogether #gardendesign #landscapedesign #plantingdesign #sustainablegarden
Award news: delighted to receive the Best Commercial Design project on the Pro Landscaper Sustainability and Diversity Awards. Thank you to the judges for recognising the work we’ve been doing at the @ateliergardens.berlin creative and social change campus over the past three years. From a six acre site of only concrete block pavers, in a phased approach we’ve lifted 25%, and replaced that with the planting of pioneering and phytoremediative species to create a buzzing series of green spaces for people and wildlife. The block pavers have been crushed on site, creating thick mulches and habitats. We’ve also been responding to waste arising from the architectural improvements led by @mvrdv - broken ceramic toilets and basins joined the crushing, and lumps of excavated concrete were spray painted and used as boulders. Responding to what’s on site and creatively repurposing has been a really uplifting, creative and nimble discipline, and has prevented transportation of hundreds of tonnes of waste to landfill. The gardens have activated the site beyond our wildest imaginings - from a grey and unused series of spaces there are now festivals, gigs, film screenings, food markets, community events, beehives, gardening groups and even some resident rescued chickens. Our @charloharris and @portablepomme accepted the award for the studio - it’s very much been a project involving many hands and brains - @hugobugg @kapoinh @camillahiley @pikestudio.landscape. Thanks to @grassroofco for the inspiration and guidance as we started the journey and to our client @fabrixlondon for having faith in our vision of a garden of pioneers, for pioneers.
New @gardens_illustrated column! I’ve been away from home for a few days so have only just got my hands on the new Gardens Illustrated. I feel so honoured to be a small part of this incredible issue - iconic work by @hortihack and the team at Gardens Illustrated. If you’ve not yet had a chance to read it, you’re in for such a treat. My new design details series starts with what to consider if you’re making a garden at home or for others that is accessible. Inclusive places are better for all of us; in our lifetimes we will all ourselves, or those we love or care for, have different mobility needs. It features specific elements to consider based on our @harrisbuggstudio design and detailing for @horatiosgarden Sheffield & East, as well as inspiration from brilliant inclusive gardens made by designers such as @tomstuartsmith @charliehawkes_ @hortus_collective A big thank you to @joehawksworth at @harrisbuggstudio for producing this gorgeous visual. And of course huge thanks to @gardens_illustrated for entrusting me with the design details series I hope you enjoy the ones in the pipeline as they’re published! If you have suggestions on topics or challenges to cover, I’d love to hear them!
Award news: What an end to the week! We’re over the moon to hear that we’ve received a prestigious Gold design award at this year’s Association of Professional Landscape Designers annual awards ceremony which took place in Washington DC this week. Commenting on the adaptive garden we designed for @horatiosgarden at RHS Chelsea 2023 which also won Best in Show there, the judges commented: “What an experience, and a positive affirmation for healing,“ adding “the focus to a reduced carbon footprint was where a lot of gardens need to be looking in the future.” The APLD international awards honour excellence in landscape design and are judged on the basis of difficulty, craftsmanship, attention to detail and execution. *Thank you* to our landscape design colleagues for this honour, and to the huge team of people at Chelsea that made this garden possible, including @project.giving.back @ryanalexanderassociates @kelwaysplantslangport @bighedgeco @skyestonestudio @orcharddene @astrantiarose @marcfinds @janeybaskets @sarahjarmangardens @anna.dadswell @charlotte.petts @catrionaknox @abitlikejamie @noblestonework @cumbriandickerer @weberindustries @landscapeplus_uk @mcmullanstudio And of course the garden has a far more significant legacy life - it’s currently being expanded to serve one of Europe’s largest spinal injury centres, at the Northern General Hospital Sheffield. Here, it will nurture and support over 360 in-patients, their families and friends each year as well as the 250 NHS staff supporting their rehabilitation. RLX Construction, the main contractor, are ensuring that groundworks are continuing apace, with a big two weeks of tree planting in November undertaken by soft landscape contractor Atlas Green. And if you’ve not yet spotted it @horatiosgarden are recruiting the new Head Gardener as we speak; more over on their grid - do pass it on! 🎥 and edit @thenakedginger @maritzatjie #landscapedesign #gardendesign #plantingdesign #adaptivedesign #sustainabledesign #inclusivedesign #therapeuticgarden #apld #apldawards #rhschelsea #harrisbuggstudio
