Dating to the early to mid Victorian era this superb 15ct gold locket pendant is a collectors dream. Crafted from 15ct gold which has been bloomed to give an even richer buttery yellow gold hue and set with a stunning foil backed Amethyst exhibiting the most stunning pinky/purple hue, six claw set, to a slightly raised setting with dainty ball motifs to the base. A finely textured background gives rise to the highly ornate raised scrolled work to the perimeter giving a splendid 3D dimensional effect. Measuring a drop of 3cm including bale, the heart measures a larger than average 2.0cm x 1.8cm with out the bale. To the verso the original ovoid shaped locket compartment is present with its original woven hair matting beneath. Designed as sweet faced terrier veritably awash with tiny rose cut diamonds, bright cabochon garnet eyes, and a darling pink tongue in vitreous enamel cheekily visible! Crafted from 18ct gold, Platinum and the diamonds set in silver as per the era, the circular surround is heavy and beautifully crafted and styled as a large Tamborine with Platinum jingles - called Zills , (we learned this today…!). A versatile piece of jewellery which can be worn not only as a brooch but also as a pendant given the hidden substantial pigs tail pendant arm. Of exquisite craftsmanship, when these pieces present (rarely) to the market they are invariably French in manufacture .. unfortunately this one is not hallmarked but has been fully assessed by our gemmologist. A serious (but whimsical!) piece of jewellery for the serious collectors of rare Victorian jewellery.
