Xiamen Airlines HQ wins Gold in the ‘Industry-City’ Category at the REARD Global Design Awards in Shanghai. 🏆 Xiamen Airlines Headquarters tower is located at the heart of Xiamen Cross-strait Financial Centre Masterplan in the Eastern Huli District. The headquarters is part of a new complex designed by the practice, including an adjacent hotel tower and Xiamen Airlines Plaza, which is a new civic space for the city. The two towers are directly connected by the plaza and act as a marker for the whole district. Inspired by the Wuyi Mountains and iconic paintings of the Chinese rock mountains, the new headquarters rises vertically through the landscape, creating a dynamic composition that is instantly recognisable. Discover a cityscape built entirely out of gingerbread - @thegingerbreadcity opens tomorrow! Curated by the @museumofarchitecture, the exhibition will take place at The Gaumont, Chelsea. 🍪🏠❄️ This year’s exhibition explores the theme of “The Recycled City” focusing on re-imagining urban spaces by re-using land, buildings, and materials to create inspiring environments for living, working, and playing. Foster + Partners creation of “The Gingergrid Tower” reimagines Hearst Tower, an existing visionary example of adaptive reuse, as a central hub for sustainable building recycling and reuse in an urban context. By leveraging the tower’s distinctive diagrid structural system, an expanded framework incorporates a series of new triangular modules designed using principles of Design for Disassembly (DfD) and material reuse. Once assembled, they transform the tower into a dynamic, ever-evolving base that supports new collective spaces. Congratulations to the team of bakers and designers from across the practice. Celebrating 15 years of excellence, Sulis Hospital Bath has won the Healthcare category at the 2024 Architecture Today awards. 🏆 There is a wealth of evidence to suggest that a well-designed hospital environment can improve recovery times and contribute to better outcomes for patients, while providing a more enjoyable workplace for medical staff. Designed by Foster + Partners, Sulis Hospital Bath is a quietly revolutionary building which incorporates biophilic design to enhance wellbeing and improve recovery times for patients. The hospital is set in the picturesque Somerset countryside, on the outskirts of Peasedown St John village. Originally commissioned by Circle Health Group in 2009, as part of a privately funded initiative, the hospital has been delivering a holistic approach to healthcare for over 15 years. In 2021, it was bought by the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and renamed Sulis Hospital Bath. This acquisition has grown the hospital’s services, increasing capacity at the facility for both NHS and private patients. 'The building, and its relationship to its landscape, have been well thought through to produce an environment that is flexible, efficient, welcoming and calm. Fifteen years on, this innovative building still sets high standards for the sector as a whole.' Designs revealed for Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach masterplan in Bahrain. Foster + Partners’ Bilaj Al Jazayer Beach masterplan will create a dynamic new destination on Bahrain’s southwest coast. Spanning 3.5 kilometres of beachfront, the walkable mixed-use district provides new homes, hotels and retail, alongside public green spaces and state-of-the-art amenities. Drawing inspiration from Miami’s low-rise Art Deco buildings and Bahrain’s traditional vernacular, the masterplan puts forward a multi-layered and human-centric approach to architectural design. Learning from Bahrain’s traditional passive design strategies, the mixed-use neighbourhoods feature shaded green courtyards and alleyways, which provide cool outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy. The centrepiece of the masterplan is a public surf park, which uses state-of-the-art wave generating technology to replicate the natural ocean environment on land. “We are creating a green and walkable community on the beach, which offers a range of crafted experiences for residents and visitors. The permeable development features tree-lined streets, shaded courtyards, and a spectacular public park that directly connects with the waterfront. Needless to say, the west-facing district will also offer some of the best sunset views in Bahrain.” Gerard Evenden, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners. The masterplan framework has been developed for Edamah, a leading real estate investment and development company that is committed to creating sustainable, high-quality developments, which enhance Bahrain’s urban landscape. 🔗 Read the full article via the link in bio. #Architecture #Design #Construction #MixedUse #Masterplan #BilajAlJazayerBeachMasterplan

Inside ICD Brookfield Place - designed by @fosterandpartners to bring business, lifestyle, and community into one inspiring space. Modern architecture, natural light, and thoughtful details make the space a dynamic hub for connection and growth in the heart of the city.

Connecting spaces through vertical transport design. Staircases, ramps and lifts fulfil a fundamental function: navigating individuals to different levels, whether that be within a building; connecting floors, across split levels or seamlessly linking indoor and outdoor spaces. Staircases, ramps and lifts are evolving beyond their primary function. Today, they can act as the centrepiece of a building and even provide additional social spaces. At Apple Fifth avenue visitors leave the street and descend under the light-flooded glass cube, down a spectacular stainless-steel staircase. Whilst at Bloomberg, a distinctive hypotrochoid stepped ramp and level bridge, characterised by its smooth continuous three-dimensional loop, flows through the full height of the building, adding to the drama of the space. At Soundport, Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S, access to the floors above is via a feature staircase or glass lifts that further animate the atrium space. Each unique, each iconic. The Making of… Canary Wharf Underground Station. Last month marked twenty-five years since the opening of Canary Wharf Underground Station, which was one of eleven new stations built for the Jubilee Line extension project from Green Park to Stratford. The 300-metre-long building is located within the hollow of the former West India Dock using a cut-and-cover construction technique. At ground level, the roof is laid out as a landscaped park, creating Canary Wharf's principal recreation space. Toby Blunt, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners, describes the process of designing and realising the project at the turn of the millennium: ‘Twenty-five years on, over 40 million people pass through the station each year, making it second busiest on the London Underground outside Central London after Stratford. With the more recent additions of Crossrail Place and the new Elizabeth line station, I have no doubt that the area will continue to thrive for generations to come.’ 🔗 Read the full article via the link in bio. #Architecture #Design #Construction #Engineering #London #CanaryWharfUndergroundStation #CanaryWharf
