A week ago we held the second and final round of the 3rd Rise & Shine – Animation Development and Pitching Lab for young talents. Congratulations to all award winners! 👏👏 Organized by @animafestzg and Animateka in collaboration with @ceeanimationworkshop , Rise & Shine is a storytelling and pitching event consisting of lectures, workshops and individual and group sessions with experienced film professionals. In 2024 a total of 11 inspiring projects were developed by their creative teams of directors/script writers and producers. The 2024 edition started in June at Animafest Zagreb, with a series of lectures and workshops focusing on story development. In October, the teams worked on the art of presenting their projects to a live audience, as well as the production of animated short films. The final part of their Rise & Shine 2024 journey, the pitching presentation in front of the professional audience, took place in December at AnimatekaPRO. 🎦 This year, our special focus was on 𝐂𝐳𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! Throughout seven segments, we explored films featuring humor, classic and contemporary works, restored gems, and children's films. Some of these Czech gems originated from 𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐔—𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐕 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞. The school consistently produces students who receive major awards worldwide and regularly feature in our competition programs, and was also awarded Best Animation School at Animafest Zagreb in 2017. We're happy to shout-out the launch of their 𝐕𝐎𝐃 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 FAMU Films @famu_films which aims to share the rich animation heritage of the school. Hands behind the animation🖤 For the second year in a row, I photographed Animafest. I knew almost nothing about animation, but by photographing the Q&A sessions after numerous screenings and lectures, I realized how painstaking and demanding this job is. Some animators take years to make a film that lasts ‘only’ about ten minutes, and then I learned that there is pinscreen animation, which sounds like a special circle of hell to me. The technique of pinscreen animation was invented by husband-and-wife team Alexandre Alexeieff and Claire Parker in 1932 in Paris. It’s a board with 240,000 holes, each of which has a pin going through it. By lighting the board at an angle, the pins cast shadows in shades from black to almost white, depending on how deep the pin is placed into the board. A photo is taken after each change to the board, and then the design is modified before another photo is taken. One second of animation consists of 24 photos. While listening to a lecture, I glanced over and saw the hands of the animator who was speaking and decided to create a series of photos of the hands that make animated films.
