They fight battles most of us never see, venturing into infernos where the heat is relentless, and the danger is everywhere. They stand next to other heroes in the dictionaries definition of hard work and selflessness. Their courage often goes unnoticed, hidden behind smoke and ash. They are wildland firefighters. As we go about our busy lives, it's essential to remember and honor those who run toward the flames. Help us stand by our wildland firefighters and their families when they need it most. #WildlandFirefighter #FirstResponders #Fire #SupportOurWildlandFirefighters #Wff #WildlandFirefighterFoundation #Firefighter #Nonprofit #ServeOurCommunity

This week in place of our normal Weekly Roundup we would like to showcase the US Hotshots Association’s commemorative calendar. The 100 Fires Project is working together with the US Hotshots Association to help produce their wall calendar that explores pivotal moments in wildland fire history. The calendar serves as both a memorial and a learning tool for every wildland firefighter, with the intent to honor the past and pay it forward. QR codes connect you to detailed incident reports from the 100 Fires Project, where experts and volunteers have carefully documented these events to ensure the stories are not forgotten. Each month highlights anniversary dates of historic incidents that were catalysts in shaping the wildland fire service. All photos included were submitted by Hotshot crew members, capturing the 2024 fire season. Price is $21.00 plus shipping...great gifts for the holiday season! The calendar can be ordered starting December 4th by going to: ushotshots.com

May you all have the plans you need for the holiday ahead. This time of the year can be challenging for some, especially our wildland fire community who are transitioning off another busy season. This year brought extra challenges with some being furloughed when they expected to work, all of us wondering if our incentive pay will continue and figuring out how to fit back into social lives and family after being gone on so many fires. For anyone struggling with the upcoming holidays, take small steps. Allow yourself to say “no” to plans, engage in small ways one step at a time. Have coffee with a friend, read a book that has been on your list, take one of your favorite hikes or enjoy a long hot shower. Make moments about your needs, guilt free. For those really struggling please reach out to the suicide hotline by calling or texting 9-8-8. May everyone have a safe and joyful holiday in whatever style you need this year. #wildland_firefighters #wildlandfirefighter #wildlandfire #wildlandfirefighters #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness @wffoundation

The anniversary date for this week is a very notable fire from our history. As winter approaches and crews are “wrapping” up their season, it is important not to become complacent. Fire season may be slowing down but it never really stops; some epic wildfires have occured during winter months. 11/25 - on this day in 1956, the Inaja Fire killed 11 firefighters as it burned under a Santa Ana wind influence east of San Diego, California. A crew from the Viejas Honor Camp was working downhill in steep terrain when an evening wind reversal caught them by surprise. The victims included seven Viejas crew members, one correctional officer, and three US Forest Service supervisors. Following this fire a special Task Force was assembled and they produced a report with recommendations for many improvements that still influence the wildland fire service to this day, including the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders. Every career wildland firefighter should take time to read the 1957 Task Force report. See links in our Bio for additional information on these incidents.

Weekly Roundup for November 18 to November 24 The 100 Fires Project anniversary date from this week is yet another fast moving interface conflagration. As a reminder of current conditions all across the eastern part of the country, this event occurred during an extended autumn drought. 11/23 - on this day in 2016, the Chimney Tops 2 Fire started; four days later it escaped containment and raced through the resort town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The fire burned 17,000 acres, destroyed over 2500 structures, and took the lives of 14 civilians. Consider taking time to reflect on these events to honor our past and learn from our past. See links in our Bio for additional information on these incidents.
