When was the last time you visited your local library? If you're in Wyoming, maybe more recently than anyone in any other state — Wyoming residents visited libraries 3.82 times per person in 2022. Also topping the list were: 📗 Washington, DC (3.78 visits per person) 📗 Ohio (3.41) 📗 Kansas (3.32) The states with the fewest visits per person were: 📕 Mississippi (1.30) 📕 West Virginia (1.21) 📕 Hawaii (0.60) Outside of borrowing books, people often use libraries for internet and computer access, community events, and study spaces.

In September, authorities confiscated 2,200 pounds of fentanyl at US borders — a 31% increase from the previous month. However, year-to-date seizures are 16% lower compared to the first nine months of 2023. Fentanyl made up 95% of opioid seizures in 2023 compared to 32% in 2019, when heroin made up a larger share of seizures. While some fentanyl is seized along the northern border and at coastal/interior ports of entry (think major airports and seaports), the southwest border is the main trafficking route. 88% of fentanyl is seized at official ports of entry along the US-Mexico border.

The US tends to import more than it exports, and 2023 was no exception. The US imported $1 trillion more than it exported — the 6th year in a row with a trillion-dollar trade deficit (adjusted for inflation). In two-thirds of its trade relationships with at least $10 billion in two-way trade, the US imported more than it exported. The highest trade deficits: 🇨🇳China: $279B 🇲🇽Mexico: $152B 🇻🇳Vietnam: $105B But it’s not all deficits! The US exported more than it imported with one-third of its trade partners, creating a trade surplus. Largest surpluses: 🇳🇱Netherlands: $43B 🇭🇰Hong Kong: $24B 🇦🇪United Arab Emirates and 🇦🇺 Australia: $18B

Every month, thousands of refugees seek safety in the US – with just over 7,600 arriving in October. Between November 2023 and October 2024, around 100,000 new refugees arrived in the US – nearly double the 65,200 who arrived in the previous 12 months. Unlike asylum seekers, refugees apply from abroad, undergoing rigorous screenings before resettlement. Initially set high in the 1980s, refugee ceilings (an annual maximum number of admissions) have fluctuated due to various administrations' policies. In 2021, refugee admissions increased after hitting a 40-year low of 15,000 under President Trump in 2021. President Biden raised the ceiling to 62,500 that year and set it at 125,000 for 2022–2024.

‘Tis the season for shopping, according to Census Bureau data. 🎁 Since 1992, Americans have spent more in December than any other month. In December 2023, Americans spent an estimated $586.98 billion in the retail sector. That’s about $1,750 per person — and a jump from the estimated $532.85 billion spent in November . This is still shy of the December 2021 peak of $593.34 billion, which saw a record 9.0% jump compared to 2020 — the largest year-over-year boost in spending since at least 1992.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures inflation across the country — but not all cities feel it the same way. Each area’s unique mix of supply, demand, and local factors means inflation hits differently depending on where you live. In October, New York City had the highest inflation rate at 4.0%, followed by Chicago (3.5%) and Baltimore (3.4%). On the flip side, Phoenix had the lowest rate at 1.6%, with Atlanta (1.9%) and Houston (2.1%) right behind. Where does your city stand?
