Burning Tree Falls, Disaster Avoided! Sometimes hazard trees will be so far along in their hazardous condition that they fall on their own. We don’t see this as a problem as long as people are safe. Sometimes the tree collapses in a way that can actually benefit the local ecology. #nature #fire #ecology

Tree Defects Can Come In Clusters! 🤔 Sometimes, trees groups or clusters can get infected and thereby weakened by the same disease. When this happens, most or all of the trees affected may become a risk to values. #nature #earth #fire #trees #wildfire #ecology #treefelling #risk #safety

Ponderosa Pine’s can take a lot of heat and stay standing with a lot of burnout. 🔥 Awesome Trees 🙌 But sometimes it’s just too much…. #nature #earth #fire #trees #forest #goodfire #forests #wildfire #ecology #ponderosa

Join Cait Bell of Butte County Resource Conservation District on the edge of a burn unit as we dive into control lines' crucial role in safely managing prescribed burns. Learn how crews use hand tools to create a bare mineral soil barrier to contain the fire, separating the burned area (the black) from unburned vegetation (the green). This essential step ensures the fire stays within safe boundaries, preventing it from spreading uncontrollably. Discover why safety and precision are at the heart of every successful prescribed burn! #PrescribedBurn #FireManagement #WildfireSafety #FireScience #BurnUnit #FirePrevention #EcoFriendlyBurning #LandManagement #SustainableForestry #ClimateSolutions #ClimateAction #ForestHealth #Nature #GoodFire #PrescribedFire

Prescribed Fire: Restoring Forest Health and Community Resilience in Butte County I recently had the honor and privilege of being invited to a Prescribed Burn with the Butte PBA. This is the first of several videos from this great event. Join David Mitchell, Butte Prescribed Burn Association, in Magalia, Butte County, as he explains the importance of prescribed fire in forest management and community safety. In this video, you'll see: - How prescribed burns create a mosaic to encourage native species and control invasive plants. - Efforts to change the local perception of fire from fear to a valuable land management tool. - Collaboration between organizations like the Mechoopda Tribe, Butte PBA, Cal Fire, the Forest Service, and local landowners. Learn how these carefully managed burns restore ecological balance by reducing hazardous fuels, controlling conifer encroachment, and protecting historic Black Oak populations. With flames kept low and resources carefully coordinated, this burn demonstrates how fire can be used safely and effectively. Discover the role of community-driven initiatives like the Butte PBA and the importance of fire as a tool for resilience and restoration in fire-prone areas. Watch to learn how prescribed fire is helping heal the land and reconnect communities with traditional forest management practices. #ButteCounty #ChicoCalifornia #Fire #PrescribedFire #GoodFire #BringingFireBack #CommunityStewardship #ForestHealth #FireSafety #ParkFire #CampFire #Paradise

When Wildfire strikes, many trees can become hazardous posing a very real and serious risk to life and property. Around human use areas, and where people may be working, we fell such hazards making it safer for people in those areas. We will also fell trees near the fire perimeter that could spread the fire through what we call, “torching”. It’s where the fire climbs up the tree in a way that can spread the fire beyond the control lines. “Torchable” trees are felled to reduce the risk of spread. We don’t fell all the dead trees, because we know that standing dead trees are a valuable part of forest ecology. #wildfire #fire #safety #workersafety #treesafety #wildfireprevention

Controlled Burning On A Wildfire! Back Burning on the Boulder Fire near Cascade, ID. 🔥 What’s a Back Burn, or Controlled Burn, and Why do we do it? In this video I share a Back Burn we used to control a wildfire in the West Mountain Range of Idaho. I think the wildfire itself will for the most part be beneficial for the ecology 🌱 of this landscape, but we try keeping it under control to be sure it doesn’t get out of control. 🤘 #wildfire #fire #fireecology #wildlandfirefighter #wildlandfire #forestfires #controlledburn #controlledburning #backburn

What do we do with hazard trees after felling them? It all depends on the situation. Some projects will require us to remove the trees, while others will require us to leave them. If there are too many dead fallen trees in the area, we may be required to remove the entire tree to reduce fire risk. Sometimes the hazard tree may be pulled out in one piece with branches attached, and used for Aquatics Restoration elsewhere. Occasionally we are able to sell some of the logs to help pay for the project, or the proceeds may pay for other ecological services. #treefelling #hazardtrees #nature #earth #wildfire #ecology #forest #forests #trees

Get Water From Anywhere! When fighting wildfires, water is often far away, and aircraft must fly long distances to do their work. If there’s a close option, we’ll go for that. Sometimes it’s a tight fit. No Beavers were harmed in the making of this film. @timberlinehelicopters #helicopter #wildfire #fire #nature #beaverpond #beaver

What can you learn from an old stump? Every stump tells a story. Most stumps we see these days were cut with chainsaws, but we occasionally find stumps that predate the use of mechanized equipment. #nature #earth #fire #trees #forest #goodfire #forests #wildfire #ecology #oldstumps #stumpforensics

When assessing trees for risk, we make sure to look at all sides of the tree…. #nature #earth #fire #trees #forest #goodfire #forests #wildfire #ecology #safety #risk #treefelling #hazardtrees
