What an unpredictable rollercoaster to ride around the sun 365 days a year. And yet still, on the days I can get out of bed, I’ve somehow made a lot of incredible memories by seeking out beautiful things, watching the people I love become better versions of themselves, and fighting for a better world. I met Tori when we were about 12. 🧛🏻‍♀️ There was something unspoken that bonded us, or really, something we didn’t yet understand. At twelve we didn’t know what neurodivergent meant, that it wasn’t normal for our homes to be so tense, or why it felt so much better to escape into the mind of bella swan each night… We just felt different. But I always saw her as magical, and brave, and strong, and so many things I wanted to be. There were times growing up I felt myself pushing away from her, because she seemed to be born with a confidence it took me decades to grow. I’ve watched life chip some of that confidence away, and build it back up in pieces, on a stronger foundation. I struggled a lot in school, at first with my peers, and later on in high school, with my grades. As much as I struggled, I didn’t feel like anybody ever really noticed, or cared. But she always did. For the last few years, Tori has been working her ass off as a teacher, and next year she’s going to be helping guide kids who are the same age that we were when we met. I just can’t stop thinking about how lucky those kids are, who will have someone who really cares by their side to guide them, the way she’s been there for me the last 17 years. Tori, I am so so lucky I got to help you set up and pack up your kindergarten classroom, so lucky to watch as you keep growing and reaching your dreams, and the luckiest of all to call you my best friend. license plates from hundreds and thousands of miles away all gathering by the river in lil poplar bluff, Missouri for a clear view of the moon covering the sun for 4 minutes 🫶🏻 The people coming together, sharing glasses and chairs and lemonade, jamming into a small town diner for a fried egg “eclipsed” by a round sausage and surrounded by “bacon rays of light”, gathering around me in delight as I turned the plastic lid of my coffee cup into a pinhole camera, and as the shadows in the tree we parked under turned to a sea of crescents, gasping and clapping and dancing and singing in joy together, was almost as impactful as the spectacle itself. I’m officially a converted eclipse chaser!

thanks to tori for getting all her film developed, which 1. proves I left the house at least 3 times last year, and 2. reminds me that we tried to go tubing for her birthday and accidentally “entered” the river at the exit station and floated into, and got lost in, the Florida wilderness (I think the last photo is me escaping via a log) love u forever @louis3belcher we stay getting lost at sea
