“A New Winter” is a fine art photography project that reimagines winter sports culture. Inspired by @sofia_jaramillo5’s experience as a Latina growing up in Sun Valley, this project highlights the evolving culture of winter sports. It contrasts traditional images and invites a vision for a more inclusive future. We’re excited to announce that Jaramillo’s project, “A New Winter,” is featured in an 8-page spread in the November/December 2024 edition of Outside Magazine, and it’s now live online! 🎉 Over the next four months, we will be sharing images and stories of the incredible athletes and individuals who helped bring Jaramillo’s vision to life. On Monday, December 9, the Biden Administration officially designated the Carlisle Indian Industrial School campus in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a national monument. It’s the seventh new national monument that Biden has created since taking office in January, 2021. Founded in 1879, the Carlisle School was one of the more than 400 Indian boarding schools that were a cornerstone of U.S. efforts to forcibly assimilate Indigenous peoples. The new monument will memorialize the 7,800 children from 140 tribes who passed through the Carlisle School, as well as the thousands of children and communities that were impacted by forced assimilation policies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. “It is in the public interest to preserve and protect the objects of historic interest associated with the Carlisle School and its prominent role in the story of Federal Indian boarding schools instituted under the United States policy of forced assimilation of Native children,” Biden said in a statement. “Designating the former campus of the Carlisle School […] as a national monument will help ensure this shameful chapter of American history is never forgotten or repeated,” the announcement said. “Acknowledging the Federal Government’s policies aimed at destroying Tribal and Indigenous political structures, cultures, and traditions—including through the Federal Indian boarding school system—takes a step toward redress and national healing in the arc of the survival, resilience, and triumph of Indian Tribes (including Alaska Native Villages) and the Native Hawaiian Community.” Tap the link in our bio to read the full story. ✍️ : @miyomcg #monument #nationalmonument #news #outdoornews #carlisleschool
