When we learned about the Women’s Wildland Fire Bootcamp in Missoula, we knew we had to get involved. The Wildland Fire workforce is already under strain, and women are significantly underrepresented in the field. To show our support, we provided packs for all the attendees and sent one of our own, Noel Scherer, our Fire Sales Associate, to participate in the bootcamp. "When we heard about the all-female Fire Bootcamp hosted by the UM Fire Center, we knew we wanted to support it by donating our women-specific fire packs. Additionally, I felt it was important for me to attend, as my experience in fire is limited, and this was a great opportunity to learn more about the challenges that Wildland Firefighters face. During the four-day boot camp, we covered topics such as lookouts, communications, fire ecology, mental health, digging fire lines, and using torches. We had many amazing instructors, mentors, and coaches who shared their experiences, and it was inspiring to see so many women making their mark in the fire service. The experience was truly empowering, and I'm grateful to have been a part of it." _ 📷: Noel Scherer #mysteryranch #builtforthemission

FIRE CREW: Sawtooth Hotshots The @sawtoothihc was established in 1967, emerging from a national need for additional hotshot crews identified after the 1966 fire season. Based in Twin Falls, Idaho, the crew operates primarily in the Sawtooth National Forest and surrounding areas, tackling some of the most demanding and hazardous tasks in wildland fire suppression. Originally formed from a 25-30-person spruce budworm control crew, the Sawtooth Hotshots quickly evolved into a highly skilled team recognized for their rigorous training and operational excellence. Throughout the years, the Sawtooth Hotshots have adapted to changing fire management needs, relocating in the 1980s to improve response times and operational efficiency. The crew has experienced significant growth, introducing physical fitness standards and increasing the number of appointed positions to enhance their effectiveness. From their early training days in Quonset huts to their current modern facilities, the Sawtooth Hotshots have maintained a commitment to excellence. MYSTERY RANCH extends a heartfelt thank you to the Sawtooth Hotshots and all Hotshot crews for their unwavering commitment and bravery in protecting our communities and natural landscapes. _ 📷: @sawtoothihc #mysteryranch #builtforthemission

When you live out of your backpack, the kit matters. Hotshots and handcrew personnel tackle some of the toughest and most hazardous tasks in the field. The bottom line is they need gear that will keep up with never-ending shifts that roll right into the next burning period and last for fire careers. Some of the most challenging demands of being a Wildland Firefighter extend far beyond the traditional list of required skills and aptitudes. In the newest Backbone Essay, Albert highlights the profound loneliness and emotional challenges faced by Wildland firefighters due to long absences from home and the difficulty of forming deep connections with colleagues in high-pressure environments Read from the link in bio. #mysteryranch #jkboots #builtforthemission
TELL YOUR WILDLAND FIRE STORY. MYSTERY RANCH is proud to partner with @wildfire.experience to administer the 2025 Backbone Series Scholarship, which is open to former and current Wildland firefighters and their partners. The Backbone Series highlights the backs behind the packs: the faces that put on the packs and boots on the ground and the backbones on which the MYSTERY RANCH Fire Line and the Federal Fire Response have been built. Our intent is to educate and inform the public of what makes this job so fulfilling and where challenges lie for those who have chosen this profession. We will recognize the men and women who wear our packs daily. The application deadline for our next round of submissions is November 30, 2024.
