🚨 Extreme Bushfire Rating for Central District This Monday 🚨 Hi MotHs, Just a heads-up—this Monday, the Central District, including our area, is under an Extreme Fire Danger Rating. This doesn’t mean a fire is likely to start (fires can happen on any day), but it does mean that if one starts, it will be incredibly difficult to control. Fires on an Extreme-rated day can spread fast, unpredictably, and with devastating impact, so it’s really important to be ready and have a plan. On Monday we’re close to the 30/30/30 rule—temperature over 30°C, wind speed over 30km/h, and humidity under 30%. I use this only as a guide to keep an eye on long-range forecasts (so I can start nudging my hubby about leaving early if needed). As we get closer, I rely on the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the Vic Emergency App for up-to-date advice. If you don’t already have the app, now’s the time to download it—it’s really helpful! If you’re unsure whether you’re in a high-risk area, check out the CFA’s Am I at Risk? page. It’s a great resource for understanding what bushfire risk looks like where you live. Want to know the risks in your area - using the BOM website www.bom.gov.au and see video below (thanks @bushfiremums: 1) Open a web browser and enter the web domain or search BOM weather 2) In the top right, select the state or territory you’re in 3) From the drop down list, select ‘Forecasts’ 4) Under the purple banner ‘More Forecasts’, select ‘Fire Danger Ratings’. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/18huQsdpvn/ MotHs also have a great resource: https://www.mumsofthehills.com.au/resources/bushfire-preparedness All links available in our website emergency resources. A Heartfelt Thank You to Online Communities and Administrators Yesterday, I had the honour of having my Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Melbourne conferred—a milestone I’m incredibly proud of and deeply grateful for. My research explored the role of online communities in preventing bushfire ignitions, focusing on Victoria and California, where the increasing frequency and intensity of bushfires demand innovative solutions. Through this study, I saw how online spaces, when respectful and thoughtfully managed, can inspire real-world action. From improving knowledge about risks to fostering collaboration, online communities have immense potential to tackle complex challenges like climate change. None of this work would have been possible without the “hmmm...interesting” moments I’ve witnessed in these spaces—moments where opposing views sparked meaningful conversations and ultimately led to positive outcomes. This research is also a tribute to the people who make these spaces work: the administrators and moderators. Creating and maintaining respectful online communities is no small task. It takes dedication, patience, and a belief in the power of connection to keep discussions thoughtful and productive. So, to all of you working tirelessly to foster better online communities, I doff my cap. Your work is essential, not just for the groups you manage, but for showing how digital spaces can lead to real-world change. Thank you for your commitment to making online interactions a force for good. 💛 — Dr Belinda Young Bushfire Mums, MumsLife, Michelle Rowland MP Senator Lisa Darmanin Jaclyn Symes Natalie Hutchins MP Aussie of the Month Australian of the Year Awards.

Looking for something unique and hand-crafted for the mum in your life. Maybe a Sterling Silver Moth Pendant would be the perfect idea. Each pendant is handcrafted with love by local Mums of the Hills member, Jean Burgers in her jewellery studio in Emerald. Pendants are cut by hand out of either solid sterling silver or copper using a jeweller's saw. The sterling silver moth pendant comes hung on a 45cm sterling silver chain. The copper moth pendant comes hung on a black cord which you can tie off at any length you wish. Each Moth pendant is hung on a small sterling silver jump-ring which can be switched out for a larger ring if you would prefer to attach it to a bracelet or other item. What came of the @theamplifycommunity event Belinda was a part of? We wanted to give you an update on the collective information: “Over time housing has become about more than just meeting our basic needs. Our homes keep us safe, enable us to be with our families and provide a place from which we can thrive. Our homes now also play a big part in our financial success and provide security in our retirement. In expanding the purpose of our homes, we have begun to make decisions that are counterproductive to things we care deeply about, like our young people being able to purchase their own homes, having a safe and secure home to live in and eradicating homelessness. The policies and processes of some of our leaders are deeply unhelpful and have also undermined housing affordability, housing options and housing security for decades. We understand better that many factors have been driving up the costs of housing, making housing less secure for people and limiting the choice of homes. They include various tax arrangements, reduced investment in public and social housing, inconsistent tenancy regulations, thinking about homes as investments, insufficient construction workforce and increasing competition for housing." At our recent event, Belinda shared some eye-opening truths about bushfire prevention in Australia. 🌿 The challenge? Our education often emphasizes mitigation and preparedness, but there's little focus on stopping the ignition sources of fires. It’s time to shift the mindset: 💡 Bushfires don’t just happen to us—many of them happen by us. While fire is a natural part of our environment, the frequency of bushfires is not. Prevention starts with awareness and accountability. Online Communities: The Game Changer Belinda's research revealed how online communities can encourage real-life preventative action, but their effectiveness depends on: ✅ Members understanding how to prevent ignition (the spark). ✅ Trust, accountability, and a shared sense of responsibility within the group. ✅ Respectful sharing of credible information. Why this matters: The way we feel about our local community shapes how we talk about it online. Knowing more people locally makes us more likely to speak positively. Your online intentions can influence others' actions offline. Remember, even if few people respond to your posts, many more are reading. Your words matter. 🌟 Let’s keep the conversation going—every chat about prevention brings us closer to safer communities. 💬 For full resources go to: LINK IN BIO . . #BushfirePrevention #CommunityMatters #StaySafe
