7 THANKSGIVING MEALTIME TIPS - for Children Who Have Feeding Challenges! 1. If you’ll be eating somewhere new, try to get details about the menu in advance. Talk with your child about the foods that will be served, so they know what to expect. This can help them feel more comfortable and ready for the meal. 2. Let your child know that there might be some new foods, but reassure them that you’ll have something familiar they enjoy—a “safe food”—available just for them. This helps them feel more relaxed and ready to enjoy the meal. 3. If you’re celebrating at home or with close family, let your child help with simple parts of the meal. Involving them in food prep—like washing vegetables or stirring ingredients—can make new foods feel more familiar and fun. Let your child assist by pouring, mixing, or stirring. These small tasks give them the chance to see, smell, touch, and even taste new foods in a low-pressure way. Remember, gentle exposure is one of the most effective tools for supporting your child with feeding challenges. 4. Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes with foods, and try themed plates or placemats to make the meal more appealing. You can find many free Thanksgiving crafts online to add some festive touches! 5. If your child is ready to try new foods: Offer a regular portion of their “safe food” along with a small amount (1 tsp. or less) of each new food. Encourage them to explore, but don’t pressure them to taste anything. 6. If they’re not ready for new foods: Serve only their “safe food” on their plate. Place a small amount of new foods (1 tsp. or less) on a separate “learning plate.” You can talk about the new foods, but there’s no need to ask them to taste it. Place the “learning plate” where they can see it, but not directly in front of them. Remember: No pressure to eat—just gentle exposure! 7. Keep mealtime fun by allowing your child to touch, explore, or even play games with new foods—no demands or pressure to eat. At the end of the meal, ask your child to help clear the table. Let them scrape food into the trash or package leftovers. This helps give them ownership of the mealtime process and creates more positive experiences with food.

🌟 Small steps lead to big milestones! 🌟 In this session, our OT guides a young woman through targeted activities to strengthen her upper body and improve coordination for daily tasks. 💪 First, climbing the wall helps build core and shoulder strength, while simulating a functional task with rubber bands targets fine motor skills and upper body endurance. RGV Kidz Place is hosting their 2nd annual fall festival to help support the RGV Kidz Place Foundation, which helps support families of children with complex medical needs with needed equipment and supplies.
