When I was growing up this is how what I thought New Year’s Eve was like when you were an adult. You know, all champagne bubble baths, caviar dreams, black tie etc etc. Cut to New Year’s eve is a night when I’m sitting around at home, probably in my oversized sleep tee shirt, watching TV (like many nights!) 🤣 Truth is I am not big on forced merriment, new year’s eve being the ultimate in that genre. It just never feels that fun to me. I don’t know who this is but she nails it! This sums up exactly what every single phone experience was like when those of us of a certain age were growing up. EXACTLY. To this day, I still know my now long dead grandmother’s number as it was the first phone number I learned as well as our home number from when I was 5 years old along with multiple friends’ numbers. Today I know NO ONE’s number. Not even my own! And I can still repeat (like a mantra) what my parents insisted I say every single time I called a friend: “Hello Mrs Friend’s mother. This is Liz. May I please speak to insert friend’s name.” Sometimes I would panic and just hang up 🤣 rather than have to speak to the grown up who answered. Kids today have no idea how hard (yet fun) it all was. Singing, dancing, baton twirling (not to mention acting and comedy) 3) Penny’s now very famous brother Garry Marshall is on the drums - multiple talents clearly ran in the Marshall family (he was a screenwriter, producer, actor and I guess musician too...) 4) Today is unusual in that it is both Christmas and the first night of Chanukah. I celebrate Chanukah, which is hard this year, as it was last, we are all praying for the release of the hostages today and everyday. No joke, every Christmas from my entire childhood just passed before my eyes (and ears!) All my favorite Christmas specials including some I had forgotten. My number one by far was “The Year Without a Santa Claus” and I just loved the heat miser/snow miser song featured in it ! But I wasn’t mad at “You put one foot in front of the other...” from Santa Claus coming to Town which was another must see Christmas special. I honestly loved every song in this reel, including the Hershey’s kisses christmas commercial. Olivia Newton-John “Hollywood Nights” special. 1980. This is everything! I can’t pretend to remember it although I wish I did! Apparently (and I’m searching frantically for vidoes of this) not only did ONJ cover this Bob Seger hit, but she was joined during the special by Toni Tennille (as in the captain and...) Tina Turner, Karen Carpenter (!!), Elton John, Gene Kelly, The Gibb brothers....Can you imagine? I love how early 80s she and the dancers look: slick bodysuits and sequins and her Cher-style reveal at the top is incredible. And guess what? Her costume and all the costumes were designed by none other than the genius @fleurthiemeyer who follows me and comments sometimes on this page. I am so honored!!!!! Olivia was truly a triple threat: stunningly beautiful with the voice of an angel and a great dancer to boot! I loved her and still miss her. American Royalty. The absolute chicest and most attractive all-American family ever. Sixty years of marriage is quite an accomplishment - not to mention his iconic business which is also close to celebrating its 60th!!! A true masterclass in branding. Wait! What?! Cher and Captain Kangaroo singing “Frosty the Snowman” 1976. Wow, just wow! How did I not know or at least remember that two of my favorite people to watch on TV back then joined forces on a special show and sang a duet?? I never missed the Captain Kangaroo show (by the way doesn’t it feel like Kangaroos loomed large in our childhoods back in the ‘70s? Like do kids today still think as much about kangaroos as we did then? I was obsessed with kangaroos and koala bears.) But I digress 🤣 I also lived for Cher and her weekly show. And then there were the Christmas specials like this one. Nothing was better than the special Christmas episodes. Oh and the Frosty the Snowman animated christmas movie was another favorite of mine. We didn’t have “streaming apps” so we could only watch shows like this, once a year when they aired making them indescribably special and exciting. Fun song. Fun compilation of clips. I know many of the movies these are taken from but two of my favorites are Bring It On (it’s my guilty pleasure - I can’t tell you how many times I have seen it 🤣) and Pulp Fiction. And of course Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a classic as is Rocky Horror Picture Show. Can’t stop watching this. It’s mesmerizing. I never tire of looking at videos of old NYC. And amazingly (hard to believe that ‘98 is now “old”) it was over 25 years ago! 1998 was a great year for me as it was the year my first child, my son Gus, was born and it was the year I started my business Liz Lange Maternity. NYC pre 9/11 always makes me a little sad and looking back at decades when my father was still alive and we were all so young is always a bit bittersweet. I’m struck by all the yellow taxis which used to define the city streets and now have all but disappeared. And seeing the people on the street not looking at any devices - we had flip phones but no blackberries and no iphones. Both of those came later. I realize it’s easy to romanticize the past and I’m definitely guilty of that but I did love the NYC of my childhood and early adulthood. This interview with Lauren Bacall was filmed in 1985, can you imagine what she’d say if she were alive today? I always admired her and how she aged gracefully. I used to see her at Grace’s market on the upper east side towards the end of her life and she still looked good but definitely not like a woman trying to hold onto 25. And don’t get me wrong, I totally understand getting a little subtle work done and I too wish I had my 25 year old body but alas time marches on. Anyway, she’s one of the greats, a true old school no nonsense dame (think Dame Maggie Smith, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn...) I have always loved her, as a child, I read and adored her autobiography “Lauren Bacall by Myself” which was published in 1978.
