The individual is said to be in poor health with apparent memory loss. A Syrian journalist has denied claims that the man is Austin Tice. CNN’s Clarissa Ward has also denied that this is Tice, who the US believes is still alive somewhere. Austin Bennett Tice is an American freelance journalist and a veteran U.S. Marine Corps officer who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria on August 13, 2012. Tice was working as a freelance journalist for McClatchy, The Washington Post, CBS and other media when he was abducted from Darayya, Syria. There was no immediate contact from Tice or his captors, but in September 2012 a 47-second video of Tice blindfolded and bound was released. In October 2012, a US spokesperson said it was believed, based on the limited information it had, that Tice was in the custody of the Syrian government. No government or group in Syria has said it is holding Tice. In February 2015, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) launched its pro bono #freeaustintice campaign. Since September 2012, RSF has been assisting and advising his family. His parents asked RSF to help them raise awareness about their son’s situation. RSF partnered with the global advertising agency J. Walter Thompson to prepare a public awareness campaign in order to do everything possible to bring Tice safely home. The campaign has since garnered over 17,000 signatories and a widespread blindfold pledge on social media. In April 2018, the FBI increased their reward for information regarding Tice’s whereabouts to $1 million[19] and two US officials said Tice is believed to have survived captivity. In August 2018, a US State Department official said the US government still believes Tice is being held by the Syrian government or its allies. 📸: UPDATE - According to Matthew Miller, State Department spokesman, states that the United States has been in communication with rebel groups in Syria regarding Austin Tice, the prior Marine journalist captured in Syria in 2012. Tice’s family and members of the United States government to include President Joe Biden have expressed through the years and recently that they believe Tice is still alive and being held in Syria. As rebel groups in Syria have already begun emptying prisons maintained by the Syrian Arab Army and overall Bashar al-Assad Regime, his family and political leaders hope Tice will be amongst one of those found and freed. “We have sent very clearly the message that as they move through Syria liberating prisons, that our top priority is the return of Austin Tice,” spokesman Matt Miller said. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also made it clear that getting Tice home was a “top priority.” The FBI reward program is offering $1,000,000 for credible information that leads to his return while the State Department reward program is offering $10,000,000.
