Wednesday, the #FDNY held a promotion ceremony for Battalion Chiefs at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island. Congratulations to all the promoted members! “Today each of you being promoted have already accomplished so much in your careers, and each of you carry the kind of education that is only achieved by doing,” said FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker. “As Battalion Chiefs, you will help countless junior members become the firefighters they need to be to be safe and successful in the FDNY. You will make tough decisions. Most importantly, you will work to keep your members safe.” “Each of you brings decades of experience to your new position, and that experience is crucial on the fireground. That all of you have been through so many different scenarios and emergency situations is what makes this Department the greatest in the world,” said Chief of Department John Esposito. “We need you, and we’re counting on you. We are confident in your abilities, and we know you will be the leaders our members in the field deserve.”
More than one-third of home fires occur during the months of December, January, and February. The holiday season brings a higher risk of fire, with the use of candles, Christmas lights, and holiday decorations. Remember to be #FDNYSmart this season. 🕎 Keep candles away from anything flammable and never leave them unattended. 🎁Always turn off holiday lights before going to bed or leaving the house. ✨Always use lights that are in good condition. 🎄If you have a real Christmas tree, water it regularly to reduce the risk of it drying out.
Monday, FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker and the New York State Honorary Fire Chiefs Association presented annual scholarship awards at FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn. 32 FDNY Firefighters, EMTs, EMS and Fire Officers received scholarships towards continuing their education. The FDNY thanks NYSHFCA for making this generous investment in the future of the Department.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams lifted the temporary citywide ban on open flames and fireworks Monday following recent rainfall in the five boroughs. The #FDNY continues to remind New Yorkers to use caution when using open flames, discard cigarettes safety, and leave fireworks to the professionals. Possession or use of fireworks in New York is illegal and a criminal misdemeanor. In the month of November, the FDNY responded to 377 brush fires, up from 94 during November 2023.

If you see potentially hazardous conditions involving lithium-ion batteries at bike shops and bike repair shops, call 311 and let the #FDNY know. This helps protect the public and FDNY members. Questionable activity for charging lithium-ion batteries may include large numbers of batteries charging close together, overloaded and excessive extension cords, selling batteries that appear to be refurbished, or informal charging centers that do not appear to be properly licensed businesses. Members of the FDNY will respond to all complaints within 12 hours and take necessary action to relieve any hazardous conditions on the premises. Actions may include issuing violations and, in some cases, vacate orders.
