I can’t even believe I get to write this down. I’m Jordyn: Speech-Language Pathologist, Feeding Specialist, Mom of two… ✨and OWNER of Eat Play Say. ✨ Last year, Eat Play Say was just me (and largely a dream of what could be). Now it’s a reality of 6 other pediatric professionals and 3 creatives working alongside me to make Eat Play Say all I dreamed it would be and more. To even write that last sentence feels insane. I remember bringing my son Paul home from the hospital and wondering where all the information was that I needed to help navigate everything: Feeding. Play. Speech and Language. Nutrition. Motor Development. Where was it all? Why was it not all together? Where was this support? I never found exactly what I was looking for, so little by little I created it. This is the time of year where the posts come out saying that light up toys cause delays, ADHD, overstimulation, etc. And parents start freaking out because their little one really likes this light up cube that Aunt Martha bought for their baby shower. I’m here to tell you to relax. Toys do not cause language delays because toys do not teach your child language! You do! Why do people say that light up toys cause language delays? Most of the time, they are referring to a 2015 study from JAMA Pediatrics that found “that infants who play with tech toys featuring flashing lights and computerized talking and music- instead of traditional wooden playthings- tend to have a decreased quality and quantity of language.” And then they stop reading the article. There’s way more to it. That research article didn’t find that TOYS CAUSE LANGUAGE DELAYS. They found that certain toys impacted the PARENTS’ ENGAGEMENT with their child. It’s more about HOW you play. Not as much WHAT you play with.
