Earlier today, CAL FIRE AEU’s Tahoe Meyers Crew 1 assisted with a pile-burning project at the Lake Tahoe Airport, in partnership with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue. This important work helps reduce wildfire risk by managing hazardous fuels, even in snowy conditions. The snow provides an added layer of safety, ensuring controlled burns remain contained while making a significant impact in protecting our community. Starting this stormy Thursday morning with a flurry of prescribed burning updates since yesterday. Speaking of flurries, Beckwourth Ranger District firefighters reported that they have snow on the ground this morning from the storm that rolled in last night! So we will start with them! 😊❄️❄️❄️ In Lakes Basin, firefighters on the Beckwourth Ranger District successfully completed approximately 70 acres of pile burning yesterday. Smoke dispersal was good and closely monitored by firefighters throughout the operation. Plans today are to treat approximately 50 acres of pile burning, continuing with another 50 acres tomorrow. The storm is improving conditions for pile burning and firefighters report there is already additional snow on the ground this morning. There will continue to be increased firefighting equipment traffic in the area. Drivers should use caution, watch for fire equipment exiting and entering area roadways, and possible slow traffic, especially with wet and icy roads. Tucked just beyond Baxter Drive is a peaceful yet strenuous hiking trail that extends three miles up into the Santa Monica Mountains that surround Pepperdine’s Malibu campus. It is well known to local adventurers as the “hike to the cross,” aptly named to describe the wooden cross that meets hikers as they reach the top of the trek. Destroyed by the Woolsey Fire in 2018 that devastated the local landscape , the small structure was replaced on December 1, 2018, by the brothers of the Sigma Chi fraternity, who carried the 20-foot-tall cross in pieces up the trail in honor of Alaina Housley, a first-year Seaver College student who was tragically killed in the shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill on November 7.
