Scrolling through old photo’s this morning… this makes you realize again how great the influence of the weather is on the plants. This photo was taken in September 2022, the hottest and driest summer on record. I partly designed and partly improvised the border in our front garden. When laying out the plants, there were a few places that still needed to be filled. The big question was what I would plant there. It took me a while and it wasn’t easy to find a suitable plant, so in the end I went for the most terrible plant I could think of; the Gaura. In my opinion a plant that is too commercial, too short-lived and too frumpy. Could it change my point of view by applying it in this border? Turns out it did. I am very happy with the fresh white between the warm autumn colors and it does not detract from the rest at all. Yesterday I visited the gravel garden that was built a few months ago. It is beautiful to see how the textures of the leaves create the atmosphere of the garden, together with the soft colors of the flowers and grasses.
