I was on my way to the airport, when I got a call: “Yasir, cancel your flight, go back to your hotel.” I was confused. “H.E Abdullah Alswaha, the Minister of Communication and Technology in Saudi Arabia, wants to invite you to his office.” I first discovered him a few years ago when one of my clients from Saudi Arabia told me how much he admired the minister as a leader and a public speaker. I made several videos analyzing his public speaking style. Those videos went viral, and I got messages from all over the region from people who wanted to speak like him. Today, it feels like a full circle moment, After our meeting, I’ll have the privilege of training the very people who will be shaping the future of this region. This picture was taken on the day that changed my life, forever. Growing up, I had no talent, no confidence, and no clue where I was going in life. I wasn’t the kid with a big dream, a clear plan, or any real skill. I was just lost. One day, out of frustration, I typed “things to do” into Google, and it led me to a public speaking club. I showed up to that first meeting with zero confidence and tons of anxiety. My hands were shaking, I didn’t know anyone, and I was afraid of being judged. By the time it was my turn to speak, I was so nervous I swore it would be my first and last time. After my awkward introduction, a lady walked up on stage. She looked at me and She said, “Yasir, I know you’re nervous, but you just spoke in front of an audience for the first time! Congratulations.” In that moment, her words did something no one else’s had done—they made me believe, just a little, that maybe I could do this. Karen’s encouragement lit a spark inside me I didn’t know was there. She said, “Yasir, it only takes one small step to change your life forever, take that next step and come back next week.” So, I went back, even though I was still nervous. I kept practicing, week after week, and in just those first 10 days, I felt myself changing. Karen became my first mentor. She encouraged me to enter a public speaking contest …. And I won. That’s the picture you see above. That day was the first time I felt I had a real shot at being someone. From that moment, I poured myself into learning everything I could about public speaking. Now, almost a decade later, I have 4 million followers and coach some of the world’s top leaders. All of this happened because one person believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. it only took 10 days for my life to completely change. I realized that it only takes one small step to change your life forever. I just took forever to take that first step.
