Mexico just took some huge steps towards protecting animals. 🐾 On December 2nd, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum signed a set of constitutional reforms paving the way for a federal animal welfare law and enshrining animal protection as a fundamental value in the Mexican Constitution. Born Rosa Dolores Alverío Moreno, the icon had early roles in films such as “So Young, So Bad”, “The Toast of New Orleans” and “Singin’ in the Rain”. Her breakthrough came with the 1961 film adaptation of “West Side Story”. Moreno’s portrayal of Anita earned her an Academy award—the first for a Latina actress. The Golden Globes nominations are here, and several Latinas including Sofía Vergara, Liza Colón-Zayas, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez were nominated for their performances in film and television. Their inclusion this year is meaningful, as Latinx talent generally doesn’t get the praise it deserves at entertainment award shows. Additionally, Saldaña and Gomez are among the 10 nominations the musical crime film Emilia Pérez received, the most of any movie, including one for best comedy or musical. Colón-Zayas could also go on to make history if she wins becoming the first Latina to win a Golden Globe in that category. It’s the first Golden Globe nomination for both Saldaña and Colón-Zayas which is also a major moment for Afro-Latina representation. She recently earned praised for her role in the Spanish-language musical film “Emilia Pérez” alongside Zoe Saldana. However, Mexican actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez, known for his roles in “Coda” and “Instructions Not included,” recently shared that he was unimpressed with her work in the film.
