There’s nowhere quite like Carmel-by-the-Sea, with its wind-swept cypress trees and grassy dunes. This home, built paces from the water, embraces its setting fully. But you don’t have to look outside to experience the area’s signature milky-toned beaches. Forming the spine of the glass-wrapped home is a long wall clad with rammed-earth panels, fabricated with sand harvested from the building site. “We were looking for a way to bring the tactility and the sensory quality of the beach into the house so that we didn’t feel like we were keeping the beach out, but rather threading it throughout,” explains architect Jess Field, cofounder of @fieldarchitecture along with his father, Stan. “Everything else cues off of that.” See more photos of the home at the link in bio. – Photos by @joefletcherphoto Story by @bjlpdx Mechanical Engineer @montereyenergygroup Landscape Design by @jlja_landscape #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #interiordesign #interiorarchitecture #modernhouse #dreamhome #beachhouse #rammedearth #rammedearthwalls #monterey #californiahome #californiaarchitecture #architecture #homeinspiration #cozyhome #architecturephotography #hometour #architectureinspiration

Getting to this prefab A-frame requires plane flights, a car ride through rustic towns, traveling past an active volcano in Conguillío National Park, and a final, mile-long zigzag upward to arrive at a site nestled in the jaw-dropping Chilean wilderness. The black-steel and glass materials that comprise Casa Prisma took an equally demanding journey, where, once they arrived, owner Antonio Mingo assembled two structures atop a massive wooden deck he and a crew built in situ. Now complete, the journey seems to be well worth it. Gabriele needed a place to live. After a breakup, the cofounder and creative director of design studio @lagranja_design needed enough space to co-parent the two children, Teo and Ona, he has with his ex. “I looked around Barcelona’s trendy inner areas and couldn’t find anything that I even minimally liked that was in my budget,” he remembers. Feeling slightly desperate, he searched online for an affordable but sizable property for sale. A recently vacated thermal mold workshop popped up. When Gabriele toured the space, he was struck by the three massive arched windows that embraced the wide, uninterrupted sky, and allowed for natural light to drench the interiors. And that’s just the beginning of it. He was sold. Within a preserved brick façade, this Brooklyn brownstone gets a bright, minimalist reno. After scouring the Fort Greene neighborhood for a home that could grow with their family, a young couple finally found their dream home in the 1899 Italianate-style row house. Upon entering, however, the interiors were anything but dreamy, having fallen into disrepair over the years. The couple decided to pursue a full remodel, enlisting the help of @tbddesignstudio with hopes of revamping the space while leaving it more functional for their future. “As much as we love the original detailing of brownstones, it’s hard to design around them and come up with layouts that work for modern living,” says Selin Semaan, cofounder of the firm. A new two-story extension now unites the minimalist home with its commodious backyard, offering ample garden views and natural light. The translucent barn-like shell protects interior living spaces, while large-format garage doors easily open the home up to its surroundings. Before, the interiors of this Brooklyn apartment were drab and uninspired. Though set in a historic Art Deco building from 1929, it had been converted into condos in the late aughts, and suffered from a strange layout and water damage from a burst pipe. The owners, a Scandinavian family, called upon interior designer Nina Garbiras of @fignyc and architect Joseph McGuier of @jambk_ to intervene. “The clients loved the fact that it’s an Art Deco building, so they were eager for the redesign to reflect that,” says Garbiras. “At the same time, they didn’t want to do vintage Deco—they wanted to do a more modern, contemporary Deco.” To that end, intricate detailing was subtly threaded throughout the home—such as the fluted glass doors, vintage furnishings, white oak floors laid in a herringbone pattern, and rich, jewel-toned color palette. “It was really about taking it all the way back to the exterior of the building and then making more regular, well-proportioned shapes out of what we had,” says McGuier. When a Los Angeles-based entrepreneur and a writer were seeking creative refuge, they didn’t have to travel far for inspiration—the duo simply looked to their own backyard. Local landscape design firm @terremoto_landscape planted a wild and graphic garden rife with cacti and grass, and architectural designer @jeromebyron built a 245-square-foot guesthouse that serves as a work/play sanctuary for the couple and their two children. “The project was inspired by tree houses, so it naturally feels very warm and muted,” explains Byron. “However, I didn’t want everything to feel one-note, so I used the fixtures and furniture as an opportunity to introduce pops of colors to compliment the overall warmth.” Take the full tour of the backyard oasis at the link in bio. – Photography by @lukesmk Story by @jen_woo #moderndesign #modernarchitecture #interiordesign #interiorarchitecture #losangelesdesign #desertdesign #adu #treehouse #backyardoffice #guesthouse #desertlandscape #grannyflat #wfhsetup #officedesign #interiorstying #cozyhome #interiordecorating #roominspiration #minimalistinterior #minimalisthome #architecturephotography #architectureinspiration #architectureideas #homeideas #backyardideas #architecture #hometour #home
