Watching last week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills was incredibly bittersweet. It was sweet because it captured the gorgeous Malibu beach date that @keelywatson__ planned for us. It was bitter because the night it aired, my Malibu home was burning along with so many houses on Pacific Coast Highway. Whew. The poetic irony is hard to face… but yet, I’m still grateful to have had these experiences in such an idyllic place. This is the house I wanted. The house I prayed for. The house I worked in blood, sweat and tears for. The house that I put a key pad instead of a key hole in the front door because I wanted all my family and friends to have a code and use the house whenever they wanted. This is the house where I found peace after battling with racist neighbors and a community that made me have to buy it in a trust within a trust so no one would know that widowed, single Black woman with a teenager was buying on the exclusively-held beach. This was my EFF YOU I’m here house. The house that I built a movie room dedicated to my sister so she could see her films in her own sanctuary. This is the house where I finally felt like I could choose to spend time… when I wanted to and how I wanted to. It is gone. This is an unimaginable loss. I grieve with the rest of Los Angeles as it burns… and even though I’ve found even words to write here, there’s nothing that I could say in this moment to describe this feeling. What had happened was… 1. My crown? Sittin’ high in @evebyboz styled by @hairgurustudio. My face? Beat to the gods by @mzl4wson . My fit? Put some respect on the art by @mimmyyeboah! My event? BLACK GOLD to celebrate NYE in a history-making event! 2. Indescribable pride to lead Ghana’s first global broadcast of NYE celebrations at the memorial of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. 3. Adwoa is the traditional dance of the Akan people (my tribe!) of Ghana. Performers communicate their emotions and feelings— in this case— JOY and TRIUMPH. 4. The quote which inspired the evening: “I am African not because I was born in Africa, but because Africa was born in me”— Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on March 6, 1957 during his speech declaring independence from Great Britain. 5. Now THIS is a collab! 4-finger ring jewelry design with my Ghanaian sis @trufacebygrace to bring to life Nkrumah’s quote as a gift for every guest. 6. IYKYK. We made history on the very first day of 2025! For the first time ever, Ghana’s New Year’s Eve celebration was broadcast globally on @cnn, joining the ranks of the world’s most iconic countdowns. I can hardly put into words the overwhelming emotions of this moment. Gratitude fills my heart as I reflect on the journey that brought us here. When I created @blackgold, my dream was to elevate Ghana’s New Year’s Eve experience—to blend cultural significance with luxury, crafting unforgettable moments through a curated dinner, party, and fireworks display in spaces that matter deeply to our identity. This year, we celebrated at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, a site that symbolizes resilience, freedom, and possibility. This celebration carried profound personal meaning. My mother marched in the historic parade on March 6, 1957, when Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence from Great Britain. To stand beside her as we ushered in the New Year on the world stage at Nkrumah’s memorial was nothing short of divine. It is a testament to the greatness of God and the truth that everything is possible. Our dreams are never too big—but sometimes, they’re not big enough. So my prayer for you in 2025 is that God will astonish you with His limitless greatness in your life. May you stand in awe of what unfolds for you this year. This moment is my testimony. I am in wonder, and I pray you will be too. Thank you @bravoandy for this history making opportunity!
