Let’s talk about how I help my clients who are chronic nail biters ⬇️ First, what is onychophagia (aka nail biting)? 🔹 About 30% of people struggle with this habit 🔹 It’s often linked to stress or anxiety 🔹 It can be a coping mechanism for difficult emotions 🔹 Some people bite their nails out of boredom or understimulation 🔹 It’s also common in those with BFRBs or OCD Knowing this, it makes sense why people can’t just stop biting or picking their nails. For some, managing stress, therapy, or medication can help, but that’s not always enough. ✨ Here’s how I help: ✔️ I triple-check my work to make sure there are no rough edges or snags ✔️ I always finish with a polishing bit + cuticle oil to smooth everything out ✔️ When applying structured gel, I make sure the free edge is properly capped to prevent lifting, which can trigger picking ✔️ I make sure my clients have the tools they need to be successful. I always encourage them to keep a nail file on hand and use cuticle oil as much as possible The goal is to reduce the urge to bite or pick as much as possible! For many, the reward of growing out strong, healthy nails, plus the investment of time and money, helps break the habit. Others find fidget toys, stress balls, 3D nail art, or cuticle oil helpful as redirection tools. If you struggle with nail biting, what has helped you the most?
